Stokes State Forest Camp-Out

The camp-out this past week-end was a lot of fun. We arrived Friday night around 8:00 pm and set up camp in the dark, always a fun chore! We aimed our headlights onto the field on which we camped (most of us leaving our cars running, in deference to our batteries - and MOST of us avoided a dead battery that way!) and had everything pretty much all set by 10:00 pm. The most difficult part was learning to put up Mr G's 'bargain' tent (small house, actually, as it's 17 feet by 10 feet!) in the dark, for the first time. Only took 4 adults about 30 minutes!

Saturday dawned overcast, and it rained for about 15 minutes around 7:00 am. Then the gnats arrived .... :-( But the day was fine, it did not rain again and we enjoyed our meals. Most of the boys went fishing on the Big Flatbrook - only 1 bite! Can't figure out why, although I do wonder if 16 boys running up and down the banks, throwing rocks in the stream and yelling, had anything to do with it....

Saturday afternoon, most of the boys played football in the camping area although damage to the tents was avoided.... A number of Scouts were able to get advancements signed off as well.

Excitement was provided by the spotting of 'Bob the Cat' - a large housecat that we initially thought might be a bobcat!

Saturday night was another great meal - all of the patrols had good food, and everyone was hungry after an active day.

Sunday was also overcast but warmer - and gnattier.... We packed up and left the campsite by 9:30. All in all, a good week-end of camping!

I think that third tent from the left is 6 inches too far back......
